Earthquake Haiti: humedica sends medical team

by SRI, 2010/01/13

A massive 7.0 magnitude earthquake has almost completely destroyed the capital of one of the poorest countries in the world. As is reported by several sources, hardly any building in the Haitian city of Port-au-Prince withstood the severe quakes of Tuesday evening (local time: 5 pm, CET: 11 pm).

In the early morning hours, humedica already received an official request by the Haitian ambassador in Germany, S.E. Jean-Robert Saget and immediately mobilized a medical team.

Of all countries, the strongest quake ever measured in the Caribbean hit Haiti, the island nation that has been stricken by massive poverty for years.

According to eye-witness accounts, the latest disaster has destroyed the last remains of infrastructure around the capital Port-au-Prince and a high number of casualties is feared.

During the past years, humedica has repeatedly provided aid in Haiti. Therefore, our relief teams can profit from their experience gained and the good contacts established there; accordingly, our volunteers from Bavaria, led by the coordinators Simone Winneg (Kaufbeuren) and Dieter Schmidt (Nesselwang), will be able to get involved in relief efforts very quickly.

The doctors Dr. Ulrich Seemann (Hambühren), Dr. Markus Hohlweck (Bonn), Dr. Irmgard Harms (Hindelang) as well as two nurses will probably set off for the Caribbean nation on Thursday morning, taking along medical relief goods for the first treatment of 3000 patients.

humedica is asking the population for specific help in the form of a donation to the following account:

humedica e. V.
