Zimbabwe is not forgotten

humedica coordinator looks into relief measures after cyclone Idai

by Heike Knauff-Oliver

"I am travelling to Zimbabwe with a sense of gratitude." explains Heinz Horsch before he takes off to the country, which has been devastated by the cyclone Idai. He will travel for two weeks as coordinator for humedica to check on site which kind of support is needed in Zimbabwe.

Floods and landslides have taken place in particular in the provinces Manicaland and Masvingo. According to official reports 250.000 people are affected, more than 150 lost their lives. 95 per cent of the road system and ten bridges are destroyed, 48 schools and 18 drinking water stations have been damaged or demolished. At least 200 power poles have been washed away.

Mid-March cyclone Idai had hit the South East of Africa, Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe. humedica intervention teams have already helped in Malawi. But Zimbabwe, too, is still suffering from heavy damages, especially in the East of the county.

In the course of the cyclone aid in South East Africa humedica`s longstanding partner CADEC (Catholic Development Commission) has asked for support. We are now evaluating which kind of relief efforts can be implemented in the course of the proposed project. humedica would like to support this project with a funding of approximately 150.000 EUR as soon as possible.

Together with the contact persons of CADEC our coordinator Heinz Horsch will visit the affected areas in Zimbabwe. He will discuss the planned measures in detail with all parties involved and check their requirements. In close cooperation with our partners he will then develop a detailed project plan.

This is not the first humedica assignment for Heinz Horsch. He has already seen his share of regions devastated by natural disasters and of the suffering of the affected people on site. He therefore knows what he is talking about if he tells us: "I am grateful that I had the chance to grow up in a country with stable political as well as climatic conditions. I am grateful to be able to help people in need."

We from humedica, too, are grateful that the people in Zimbabwe have not been forgotten, that we were able to help them thanks to the donations and various other support we received to date. Grateful, that you are on our side to give the people in Zimbabwe new hope for a better life. Thank you!
