Medical intervention in Chad – professionals urgently needed

by Heike Knauff-Oliver,  2019/08/16

The republic of Chad is situated in the Sahel zone and one of the poorest countries in the world. The landlocked country has no direct access to the sea. Other structural disadvantages are power deficiency, only scarce industrialization and a lack of investments. Its official languages are French and (Chadian) Arab. Its predominant faith is Islam, but animism is also popular and the number of Christians is constantly growing. All religions live together peacefully in Chad.

Health care is bad. In the inner country but in cities as well medicaments are lacking. The mortality rate of babies and mothers in this region is one of the highest in the world. Many children die of preventable diseases, which could easily be treated such as diarrhoea, pneumonia or malaria – a lot of children are malnourished.

supports the mission hospital Guine Bor II situated in the North Ouest of the capital N’Djamena. The clinic was founded in 2010 by a group of religious American physicians. In order to be able to meet the daily challenges the hospital depends on practical professional help in all medical fields as well as in nursing care. Specialist physicians are urgently needed as, in general, it is difficult to find special medical training in Chad.

Regularly, humedica sends practitioners to the Chad. They all report about deficiency and emergency in many fields of medical care. The local physicians urgently need training in ultrasonic examinations, ECG analysis, surgery as well as paediatrics, gynaecology and physical medicine. Medical specialists of all kinds are lacking. As many people go blind due to cataracts, especially ophthalmologists are needed. For quite a long time now the hospital has also been looking for an experienced head nurse. She should speak English or French and be able to pass on her knowledge.

On the one hand the voluntary humedica professionals can work side by side with the medical personnel on site, on the other hand the hospital is looking for holiday replacements. There is a particular requirement for surgeons and gynaecologists, but also for dentists, physiotherapists or laboratory technicians. Personnel is needed most in the months February to May and July to September. Basic French is essential. The volunteers have to cover the intervention costs themselves. Optimal deployment duration: preferably at least three weeks. For more information please contact humedica employee Andrea Trautmann via mail or phone +49-(0)8341/966148-35.
