Tsunami wave: humedica sends out aides to Indonesia

Number of victims increases – intervention team will assist medical helpers from local partner Karya Alpha Omega Foundation

Some hours ago, the eruption of the Anak Krakatau volcano and the subsequent underwater landslide have caused a powerful tsunami, which, without warning, hit the Indonesian coast and surprised both inhabitants and thousands of Christmas vacationers. The number of casualties is increasing by the hour, hosts of injured victims are waiting for help, the destructions evoke memories of the desastrous tsunami in 2004 at Christmas time.

The Kaufbeuren humanitarian organisation humedica, certified as Emergency Medical Team by the World Health Organisation (WHO) in June this year, has decided to send out an intervention team to Indonesia to support the medical helpers of its local partner Karya Alpha Omega Foundation. In early August as well as in October, when the earth had already trembled several times this year, a medical humedica team had been able to help, too.

The situation after the tsunami is still chaotic, but it is already obvious that thousands of people, who have experienced this disaster straight on, are in urgent need of help. "We are closely monitoring the situation, also thanks to our partners of the local aid organisation Alpha Omega“, explains humedica general manager Wolfgang Groß. "Our team members will be able to support efficiently the emergency relief efforts of our colleagues on site thanks to their extensive expertise like in the afterwards of the other earthquakes this year.”

Tomorrow, on Christmas eve, the Belgian-Indonesian practitioner Dr. Alexander Jouwena (Heusden, Belgium) and Dr. Hansi Sobez (Soyen, Germany) will foreseeably set out for humedica together with the experienced coordinator and theatre nurse Klaus Ruhrmann (Rheda-Wiedenbrück, Germany).
