Floods in Malawi: humedica realizes help

Massive floods in the south of the country – distribution of aid supplies for affected persons

by LKO,  2015/01/26

Disaster alarm in Malawi: Continuing heavy rain has led to big floods in many parts of the south-east African country. Ten thousands of people had to leave their houses and are now looking for shelter in public buildings and refugee camps. humedica has reacted immediately to the international demand for help of the Malawian government and has organized the distribution of urgently needed aid supplies in the catastrophe region.

In the center of the aid measures is the heavily hit district Zomba in the south of the country, where innumerable houses have been destroyed and fields flooded. In cooperation with the long-term partner Emmanuel International Malawi, humedica is going to distribute the required aid supplies, such as plastic foils, blankets and mosquito nets, to the concerned people.

“In the current situation it is important to avoid possible consequences of the floods, such as an outbreak of cholera or a malaria epidemic”, underlines Raphael Marcus, head of the emergency and catastrophe help with humedica.

Tomorrow, January 27th 2015, humedica is going to send the internationally experienced field staff member, Heinz Horsch (Landshut) into the catastrophe region, in order to coordinate the help measures.

Malawi is one of the poorest countries in the world. 90 percent of the population mainly earn their living from agriculture and now they are not only confronted with the destruction of their houses, but also with the loss of their harvest.

humedica is asking the German population for a directed support of the aid measures in Malawi:
