EBOLA: 45 TONS OF AID SUPPLIES FOR LIBERIA

Flight with aid supplies next Monday – further supply to follow – press conference on the airfield

by Steffen Richter,  2014/09/24

Next Monday, September 29th, humedica (Kaufbeuren) is going to deliver 45 tons of aid supplies by charter flight from the airport in Munich to Monrovia, the capital of Liberia. The goods are urgently needed there for the treatment of already sickened people and they are also used to stop further spreading of the disease. Two humedica field staff members, who are going to work with a partner organization in the context of an already existing project, are accompanying the flight.

“We are dealing with a terrible disease, which has meanwhile become ever more difficult to control”, declares humedica managing director, Wolfgang Groß. “Our planning for this aid supplies flight has been going on for several weeks. Unfortunately, the special circumstances also need an extremely intensive lead time: now we are glad that this important delivery can be sent off.”

45 tons of aid supplies could be assembled by humedica during the last days. The delivery is based on a specific requirements list of the Liberian Ministry of Health, which had been developed in collaboration with the UN mission for Liberia. About four tons of the deliveries have been donated by the partner organization action medeor e.V. (Tünisvorst). The Munich Airport also contributes to this help by dispensing the flight with the passenger service charges and the landing charges.

This charter flight with a McDonnel Douglas MD 11-F is going to start on Monday, September 29th at 12 a.m. from Munich Airport to Liberia. The passengers will be the two humedica field staff members, coordinator Raphael Marcus (Munich) and doctor Sabine Kirchner (Stollberg). The Ambassador of the Republic of Liberia, her Excellency Ms. Ethel Davis is going to arrive from Berlin, in order to observe the start of this special form of help for her country and to visit the humedica headquarters afterwards.

The field staff members are not only going to control the execution of the aid supplies flight, but they will also support the fight of humedica partner Medical Teams International against the spreading of Ebola. The US American organization has been committed for months already to more than 90 hospitals in the country in the field of educational advertising and prevention, and at the same time they have also established structures and standards against this epidemic plague, an important help for the Liberian health system, which is in a very bad state.

“We have deliberately broadened the range of our commitment”, explains Wolfgang Groß. “We are going to send more aid supplies by sea freight and also the detachment of further medical staff is being discussed. The last cry for help of the Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf makes the desperate situation in the country evident and the necessity of broad help measures. I can only underline the current pleas of my colleagues from other organizations and especially ask the politicians in charge for even more intensive intervention.”

For the realization of the described help and of further measures humedica urgently asks for directed donations on the following bank account:
