The story behind the picture: building together

by Peter Erd, Ruth Bücker,  2012/06/13

Many experiences in our lives are very special moments that leave behind their traces and remain in our memories for a long time. That can be moments linked to the current situation. But that can also be moments in which we relive numerous old memories that tell a story that goes far beyond one single moment. The story behind the picture - this time from Ethiopia, where Peter Erd builds wells together with humedica.

“Bringing me stones for the well is just natural for the little boy. He has realised that the fact that we are building a well here is something very special. Also his father and his brothers and sister are here every day and support me wherever they can.

Meanwhile, the little boy’s mother cooks “Cotcho” for the workers, a dish that is prepared by pressing the stems of wild banana plants. For this, she also needs water, but as the well is not yet finished, the women still have to make the two-hours walk to the river, where they get water and take it home to the huts in old oil cans.

But as soon as the well will be finished, water for drinking and cooking and washing oneself will finally be nearby. Stone by stone we are working together in order to reach this aim."

Water means life!

In Germany, we take access to water for granted and we hardly ever think about it - if at all. Having sufficient water for drinking, as well as for daily body hygiene or for cooking is simply normal.

In contrast, people in Ethiopia rather take it for granted that water is a scarce good. Walking several kilometres in the heat in order to get water is not the exception, but rather a sad normality.

In order to counteract this situation, humedica has set up more than ten wells over the past few years. Maintenance works for these wells are implemented on a regular basis and more of the eagerly anticipated water sources are in planning stage. Up to 1,000 children, women and men benefit from one single well, as by means of providing them with clean water in the long-term at least they no longer have to worry about this problem.

Please make a donation in order to help us build more wells in Ethiopia. Wells mean water, and water means life! Thank you very much.

A well contributes substantially to facilitating the lives of up to one thousand persons. Even for the youngest it seems a matter of course that everyone helps with the construction works. Photo: humedica
