Mission team members meet for an annual exchange of experiences

Once a year, Wetzlar in Middle Hesse becomes the meeting place for humedica mission team members from all over Germany. Both full-time and honorary employees travel to the picturesque cathedral city in order to exchange experiences and get to know new friends in the framework of the humedica team day.

For me, the team day is one of the few opportunities to meet our team members in person, to maintain personal relations and exchange experiences directly with our honorary mission team members”, says humedica CEO Wolfgang Groß about the meaning of the event.

Also this year, the Evangeliums-Rundfunk (ERF) has been pleased to put their premises at our disposal for the annual meeting. 60 mission team members and employees, but also interested persons participated in a day of informative presentations, interesting dialogues and a profitable auction.

After the welcome speech by the general physician and member of the humedica board Georg Müller, admiral physician Dr. med. Rainer Pinnow informed those present about the support the organisation had received from the German Navy. This January, free capacities in the hold of a supply ship of the German Navy had been used to transport humedica relief goods to the Horn of Africa.

After that, the experienced disaster relief doctor Prof. Dr. Dr. Bernd Domres reported about the beginning of Sino-German disaster relief aid. Together with Georg Müller, Domres had travelled to the Chinese city of Wuhan last December, in order to witness the foundation of the Sino-German Association for Emergency and Rescue Medicine – a cooperation that will enable humedica to offer immediate medical aid in case of a disaster in China.

During a short review, Susanne Merkel, head of the humedica project department, once more summarised last year’s challenges and focussed in particular on the ongoing relief measures at the Horn of Africa.

Furthermore, the experience reports of mission team members in Haiti, East Africa and on the Philippines received particular attention. With her presentation “An anaesthetist on mission”, Annette Frick told her audience in an impressive way about the challenges her profession holds in case of a disaster.

As a conclusion to the event, Wolfgang Groß provided an outlook to the continuation of the relief projects in 2012 and thanked the medical mission team members for their honorary commitment. “I am also very grateful to the ERF for allowing us to use the radio station’s premises for this important meeting every year.

Besides the informative speeches, we also seized the opportunity to collect a donation for our humanitarian work. In the framework of an auction a hand-made patchwork blanket changed hands for 310 euros.

This blanket stands symbolically for one hundred blankets which humedica will be able to buy from the takings and for the warmth and love that will be passed on to our fellow humans in need in this way.
