A very special birthday present

On June 4 of this year, the experienced relief doctor Prof. Dr. Dr. Bernd Domres had a double reason to celebrate: on his 74th birthday, the humedica doctor was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. So to speak he received the country’s highest award as a birthday present – who could imagine a better timing!

Apart from federal dignitaries, like District President Hermann Strampfer and Lord Mayor Boris Palmer, also lots of friends, students and family members of the Honouree had come to the town hall of Tübingen on the occasion of this event. They wanted to express their appreciation and gratitude to the distinguished medic for his substantial commitment for people in misery. Some of the guests had travelled a long distance in order to attend this festive event.

Before pinning the Order of Merit to the jacket lapel of the “star doctor” as a symbol of highest recognition, District President Hermann Strampfer held a speech in which he paid tribute to the exceptional life work of the emergency surgeon.

Prof. Dr. Dr. Bernd Domres is pre-eminent in the field of disaster medicine and he is highly respected by his colleagues in the field on an international level. In the course of his medical career, the doctor from Tübingen could prove his surgical skills during 50 missions all over the world.

During the past few years, he took part in a total of eleven honorary disaster relief missions for humedica, and thanks to his excellent medical skills he contributed to saving the lives of numerous persons. His first humedica mission took the committed surgeon to Peru in August 2007, where he took care of the victims of a heavy earthquake.

In the following years he participated in further missions for the relief organisation and travelled to disaster regions e.g. in Haiti, Pakistan and Ethiopia, where he always stood by the people in their incredible misery with his untiring commitment and offered immediate medical aid. Only a short time ago, the relief doctor treated patients suffering from severe burns in the Republic of the Congo.

However, the relief doctor is not only appreciated for his excellent professional skills, but also for his kindness. When he is on a mission, the dedicated professor loses no opportunity to share his comprehensive professional know-how with other mission team members. Therefore, the entire humedica team can benefit from his experiences. And also the doctor himself can expand his skills during a relief mission, so that the missions are an opportunity both to teach and to learn.

The implementation of surgical interventions under the most difficult treatment conditions have resulted in Prof. Dr. Dr. Bernd Domres having gained a comprehensive wealth of experiences and a very positive reputation among colleagues in the field of disaster medicine. It definitely has a reason that the dutiful doctor is a member of numerous international bodies; he was one of the founding members of the German Institute for Disaster Medicine and he has held the position of director of the corresponding foundation since March 2010.

He is particularly proud of the successful establishment of a professorship for disaster medicine in China, an institution which the professional traumatologist and relief doctor would also like to introduce at his own former working place, the Medical Faculty of the University of Tübingen.

humedica is very grateful to the renowned expert in the field of disaster medicine for his fast and untiring readiness to take part in a mission. For this reason, it was close to the heart of board member Waltraud Walz to pass on the congratulations of the entire humedica team to the Honouree in person, and to thank him on our behalf for his exemplary honorary commitment. We would like to wish Prof. Dr. Dr. Bernd Domres all the best, health and God’s blessings and we hope that we can rely on his valuable support also in future.

There are lots of photos of the eleven disaster missions which Prof. Dr. Dr. Bernd Domres took part in for humedica during the past five years. We have compiled a photo gallery with a selection of impressive pictures that show the experienced doctor in action wearing his unmistakeable red vest. You can find this gallery on our cover page!
