Earthquake Italy: humedica and “Sturm der Liebe” actor offer help

by Ruth Bücker,  2012/05/31

This is where a new era has begun. From one day to the next nothing here is as it used to be.” Those words by Raphael probably express the thoughts of more than ten thousand Italians, who were hit by two heavy earthquakes and hundreds of aftershocks in May. With “here” the Italian refers to the Emilia-Romagna, a region in the northeast of the country.

On May 20 of this year, the earth shook for the first time with a magnitude of 5.9 on the Richter scale. Injured persons could be rescued and treated medically; those families who had lost their homes were moved to safe emergency accommodations. But none of those affected was able to find some peace, as hundreds of aftershocks brought the memories of the terrible day in May, which was marked by destruction and sorrow, fresh to their minds again and again.

Only nine days after the first disaster, on May 29, the people living in the region surrounding the city of Ferrara experienced another blow of fate, when a second earthquake of almost the same magnitude caused the ground to shake once more. Those buildings that had already threatened to collapse after the first quake, could no longer withstand the forces of nature. Churches, kindergartens and schools, residential and public buildings were either damaged substantially or destroyed completely.

The terrible result of the two natural disasters is as follows: at least 17 fatalities, hundreds of injured and, according to estimates, 14,000 homeless persons. Also Michele Oliveri is deeply touched and personally affected. He is an actor in the ARD midday series “Sturm der Liebe” (Storm of Love), who is very popular – also in his home country Italy – thanks to numerous series and a TV production with Mario Adorf that was broadcasted at the beginning of the year.

I would like to set a sign”, he explains after a visit to the deeply shocked region of the Emilia-Romagna. A sign that gives hope to those affected. That shows them that they are not alone. And that will help them to reconstruct their destroyed houses and communities after having overcome the first shock. And therefore the actor, who lives close to Munich, calls for donations.

Please help us to support those people whose lives have been turned upside down due to the natural disasters. The people of the popular holiday destination Italy need our help in the medium or long term. Thank you very much for offering this aid together with us.
