humedica sends doctor team to the Republic of Congo

by Steffen Richter/RBU,  2012/03/07

The explosion of an ammunition dump in the Congolese capital of Brazzaville on Sunday morning has resulted in more dramatic consequences then expected so far. In a speech to his people, President Denis Sassou Nguesso bemoaned the death of so far 146 persons. About 1500 persons are injured. Diplomats in Brazzaville even estimate the number of casualties at more than 200, and in addition, the continuously burning sources of fire threaten to cause more explosions at another ammunition dump.

According to official statements, the immense explosion had been caused by a short circuit. However, the dimensions of this accident can hardly be imagined and local relief assistants are facing substantial challenges in the fields of medical aid and logistics. Therefore, the government, represented by President Denis Sassou Nguesso, asked for targeted support.

Rescue teams are still searching for buried and injured or dead persons among the rubble around the scene of the accident. Representatives of hospitals in Brazzaville called on the people to make blood donations.

After the government’s request for help, we immediately put together a highly qualified doctor team in cooperation with the German Institute for Disaster Medicine”, explained humedica CEO Wolfgang Groß as early as on Tuesday afternoon.

The mission team members will set out to Congo within only a few hours. We are very grateful to the German Federal Foreign Office for once more offering targeted support to our relief measures, and also to the international organisation Mercy Ships for being our competent partner.

Besides the experienced relief doctor and surgeon Prof. Dr. Dr. Domres (Tübingen), the team consists of the anaesthetist Dr. Annette Frick (Balingen), surgeon Dr. Philipp Fischer (Bonn) and nurse Sebastian Möschen (Sonthofen). The team of humedica assistants is headed by coordinator Katja Völkl (Wetzlar). They are equipped with special drugs and medical equipment for the first treatment of up to 3000 patients.

Please support the humedica relief measures for the victims of the severe explosions in Congo by means of making a targeted donation.
