After the earthquake in Tabriz/Iran: humedica sends out team
Not only one, but two earthquakes shook the earth near the Iranian megacity of Tabriz within only a very short time. Statements regarding the strength of the quakes vary between 6.2 and 6.4; what is obvious, however, is that the earthquakes caused an immense degree of destruction and that more than two hundred persons lost their lives in the rubble.
The number of injured is estimated at about 2000 persons. Sad statistics that set off a mission alarm at the humedica headquarters. On Monday, the relief organisation based in Kaufbeuren will send out a medical team to northern Iran.
Already in 2003, after the devastating earthquake in Bam, the native Iranian Cyrus Ghiasi, an engineer of the Technical University Berlin, and his wife had coordinated the humedica relief measures in his home country.
Now he once more supports the humedica mission and he confirms the desperate situation in Tabriz, where according to official statements about 300 villages in the direct surroundings of the megacity are affected by severe destruction; some villages are still cut off from the outside world.
“After considering all the information we have and receiving direct feedback from Tabriz, we are convinced that our aid is needed”, explained Susanne Merkel, mission coordinator at the humedica headquarters.
Besides physician to be Hanna Bellmann (Cologne), the humedica team is formed by the experienced relief assistant Dr. Christian Scholber (Hannover), surgery assistant Klaus Ruhrmann (Rheda-Wiedenbrück), and coordinator Margret Müller (Berlin).
