Honorary assistants on the move - the new travel fund of humedica

by Daria Napieraj, 2011/03/02

At the beginning of 2011 the humedica travel fund was created. The idea comes from Dr Astrid Offer from Cologne: "The objective of this so-called travel fund is to motivate honorary assistants to travel by means of offering them financial support. Some may have the time, but not the money to pay the complete travelling costs for taking part in a humedica project by themselves. This is where the fund will come into effect and on request it can co-finance up to half of the airfare and travelling costs."

The idea of the travel fund had its beginnings at the Jab Anstoetz European Ladies Golf Awards ceremony, which took place for the fourth time in Berlin on February 3, 2011. This award is bestowed upon women who have distinguished themselves by exceptional social or charitable commitment.

One of the three winners of the popular award 2010 is Dr Astrid M. Offer. The General Practitioner, certified sports teacher and sports physician works as police doctor for the German federal police. Besides her wide-ranging honorary commitment for the anti-doping campaign in Germany, she also supports humanitarian aid.

"However, what I consider to be more important than the anti-doping campaign, is the commitment of my medical colleagues in the field of development and disaster aid", she told the jury. In the past, she herself took part in a six-week honorary mission to India and she attended the basic, further and coordinator trainings by humedica.

Dr Astrid M. Offer donated the prize of 5,000 euros that was given to the winner of the Jab Anstoetz European Golf Award 2010 to humedica and by doing so, she initiated the foundation of the humedica travel fund. This fund is to grow further by means of sponsorship moneys and other donations with the long-term objective of offering support to potential honorary assistants.

When describing her social and charitable commitment, the doctor pointed out the work of humedica and some of the organisation's special features: "humedica enables medical professionals to offer medical help and to live charity in action during their normal working life, their holidays, during special leave, or in phases of unemployment or retirement."

Honorary commitment continues for Ms Dr Astrid M. Offer. Even this year, 44 year-old Dr Astrid Offer is planning to take part in a humedica mission, maybe in Africa, India or a disaster region.

"One thing is certain", she said "many times in my life will my cell-phone still receive text messages by humedica saying: disaster mission in..."

Using the words which Ms Dr Astrid Offer addressed to the jury, we would also like to ask you for donations for the travel fund: "Support humedica and enable medical teams from Germany to offer help by easing people's misery, improving their living standards and saving lives!"
