humedica can look back on a long history of its commitment in Sri Lanka. The beginnings reach back as far as to 1983.

It was in the same year that the bloody fights started between the population groups of the Singhalese and the Tamil, and that humedica CEO Wolfgang Groß visited the island state off the Indian coast.

Touched by the people's fear and suffering, Wolfgang Groß initiated and implemented extensive relief measures for those affected in the war zones in the years to come.

Together with the befriended Pastor Sam Rajasuriar, head of a Christian community in Manipay, Wolfgang Groß founded the humedica subsidiary organisation humedica International Lanka in 1994,

With Sam Rajasuriar acting as Chairman, this organisation coordinates the various different projects of humedica in Sri Lanka.

One of these projects is the family sponsorship programme run by humedica. It is aimed at families whose very existence is threatened by poverty.

This programme provides families with basic provisions by giving them an access to food and every-day commodities, clothes, health care and education.

Since its beginnings, the humedica family sponsorship programme has been expanded to further countries, such as Brazil, Haiti or Ethiopia. Nevertheless, the programme's origin lies in Sri Lanka, a country scarred by civil war, tsunami and poverty.

It had been a matter of great personal importance to humedica CEO Wolfgang Groß to offer support and care to the countless needy families in the country.

After he had seen the suffering and poverty the people were subjected to due to the blows of fate they had received in the past, Wolfgang Groß decided to initiate the humedica family sponsorship programme.

Today, more than 800 individual persons in five towns in the north of Sri Lanka receive targeted and sustainable support in the framework of 263 sponsorships.

This help that can be offered thanks to the humedica family sponsorships is also to reach numerous people in Sri Lanka who are returning to their home regions completely destitute after the end of the civil war.

For this purpose, the establishment of an out-patient station - called "MediMercy-Clinic" for basic medical treatment and a dental clinic is being planned. These institutions are intended to offer support to needy families in Poonagary, which is located south of the Jaffna Peninsula in the former civil war region Vanni.

Hundreds of women, whose men were killed in the battles fought during the civil war, are returning to Vanni, a region with an almost completely destroyed infrastructure.

Furthermore, humedica also intends to expand the help offered in the framework of the family sponsorship programme in Sri Lanka to the Vanni region, since this region had been hit particularly hard by the civil war.

humedica CEO Wolfgang Groß has already made first preparations in the form of talking to Sri Lankan widows during his last stay in Sri Lanka in August last year.
