Students run up more than 8,000 euros for Myanmar

by Ruth Bücker,  2011/07/01

At the end of this March an earthquake shook the northeast of Myanmar. There were only few media reports about the disaster and soon attention and knowledge regarding the misery of the people in Myanmar faded from public awareness. For the students of the Schulverband Stöttwang/Westendorf (Association of Schools Stöttwang/Westendorf) however, Myanmar was the focus of all their thoughts and actions for an entire day.

In preparation for the charity race that took place on May 24, 2011 each student had looked for sponsors among their family members or at regional companies. These sponsors agreed to pay a reward for each round of 500 metres the students finished at the race.

With the support of their parents and sponsors the boys and girls of the two schools in Stöttwang and Westendorf ran up a total amount of 8,130.80 euros, which was donated to the victims of the earthquake in Myanmar. An athletic performance for which the humedica team would like to express their heartfelt thanks to all the young and older participants in the race and their sponsors!

The idea for this charity race was brought up by teacher Susanne Kallwitz: “I know humedica, because my mother had already been working as an honorary assistant at humedica as much as 20 years ago. And when I started working at this school, I furthermore got to know the Christmas gift campaign Gift from the Heart."

The young teacher’s suggestion to organise a charity race was considered and enthusiastically accepted by headmaster Dagmar Schliwa and the other teachers. “The children are running, running, running, and it’s simply a joy to watch them,” Dagmar Schliwa says cheerfully on the day of the event.

A great performance by the little ones that we can only try to follow suit, because “it is the children who are the true teachers of humankind”. (Peter Rosegger, Austrian author).
