Neglected flood disaster in Namibia: humedica sends relief team

by Steffen Richter/RBU, 2011/05/16

This is not the first time the people of the former German colony of Namibia are fighting against a large-scale flood caused by heavy rainfalls. Already in 2009, large parts of the country had been flooded. Just like back then, the humedica teams are standing by those affected in the north of Namibia also today. Besides offering basic medical treatment, humedica is also planning to distribute relief goods.

According to most recent reports by the United Nations, the torrential rains and the massive floods caused by them mostly affected four northern regions of the country: Oshana, Omusati, Ohangwena and Oshikoto. They further report that, although the flood has overcome its peak and water levels are generally sinking, there are still about 260,000 people who are directly affected by the flood.

The mission area of the first humedica mission team is located close to the border to Angola, in the above mentioned regions that have been flooded by the water masses. For about four weeks the people living there have been fighting a brave, but almost futile battle against the water or they have left their homes and sought shelter at one of the refugee camps.

"At first, we need to take stock in the affected regions and determine the people's needs," explains mission coordinator Jörg Eich. "We definitely will distribute blankets and in particular now, at the beginning, also basic food. Later on we could for example also distribute seeds in the framework of rehabilitation projects."

The coordinator from Berlin is working together with the mission team members Maren Kuchler (Rohrdorf), Katharina Plenk (Eggenfelden), Daniela Kampmeyer (Cologne), Dr Markus Hohlweck (Bonn) and Dr Matthias Rohr (Gifhorn). With a sum of almost 200,000 euros, the German Federal Foreign Office provides valuable financial support.

"Although the flood in Namibia certainly is a neglected disaster, we are glad that we can offer targeted help to those affected", said CEO Wolfgang Groß. "We are grateful for the support by the Federal Foreign Office."
