Namibia after the great flood – humedica distributes relief goods

by Maren Kuchler/SRI,  2011/07/20

It was a devastating disaster that went almost unnoticed by the world public: after weeks of ongoing rainfalls at the beginning of the year, Namibia was affected by large-scale floodings that claimed the lives of numerous people and caused thousands of people to lose their homes.

Every family that received relief goods was registered; this relief measure was aimed at the poorest of the poor. Photo: humedica/Maren Kuchler

humedica was able to help thanks to the support of the German Federal Foreign Office. Maren Kuchler, coordinator in Namibia, reports:

After a waiting period, which resulted to be a little longer than expected (“welcome to Africa”), until all the relief goods arrived in the north of Namibia, distributions are now in full swing. They take place at the same time in the severely affected, so-called 4 O-regions (Oshana, Omusati, Ohangwena and Oshikoto) and hence our team is travelling a lot.

We distribute so-called food items (corn flour, beans, oil) and non-food items (mosquito nets, blankets, soap, water cans and disinfectant solutions). Quantities vary according to the number of family members and depending on the fact if those affected have already received relief goods during (potential) earlier distributions.

Due to large parts of the crops having been destroyed by the flood and the cold temperatures at night, demand is strongest for food and blankets.

Those who receive relief goods have been registered beforehand by the region’s authorities or the Namibian Red Cross; relief measures are above all aimed at the poorest and most needy persons. Individual persons are listed by name and then sign receipt of their goods.

Every distribution is different: sometimes there are 30 persons attending, sometimes more than 200. In some cases we also offer special support to individual families who are in urgent need of help.

As so often is the case, those suffering most from the floods were the children. Photo: humedica/Maren Kuchler

For example, humedica distributed relief goods to a family of the San tribe, a native tribe of Namibia, during the last few days. The family counts 20 members and lives in the region of Oshikoto. This native tribe has already lead an existence on the margins of society before the floods and now they needed to be resettled.

It is wonderful and very impressive to see that these people finally have something to live on once more! After numerous preparations and extensive organisational work this is a very satisfactory feeling! Many hands are shaken, some of the women sing and dance with joy…

Dear friends and sponsors of our work: we were able to implement this project also thanks to the generous support of the German Federal Foreign Office. We are highly pleased, that you continue supporting us to rebuild the basis of life of numerous affected persons. Thank you very much.
