No peace for Asia: another earthquake in Myanmar - humedica helps

by SRI,  2011/03/29

According to official statements, a heavy earthquake occurring in the north east of Myanmar on last Friday claimed the lives of 74 persons. The quake had a magnitude of 6.8 on the Richter scale. Its epicentre was located north of the town Tachileik in the mountain range bordering Thailand. The earth could be felt shaking even in the cities of Bangkok and Hanoi, several hundred kilometres away. In the meantime, humedica has obtained more detailed information about the exact extent of the disaster, which has led to the decision of offering targeted help to those affected.

"We assume that about 1000 persons have been directly affected by the strong earthquake," reported Stuart Corlett of the organisation 'Partners in Relief and Development' directly from Myanmar. "About 3000 people live in the region around the epicentre."

According to government statements on the radio, there were 74 casualties and about one hundred injured. Furthermore, about 400 houses had been destroyed, among them nine government buildings.

However, international observers assume the people in Myanmar to be worse-off. This is also confirmed by the eye-witness report of a colleague of Stuart Corlett's, who had travelled to the severely affected village of Dah Ler. This is what he told humedica: "85 percent of the buildings here have been destroyed; there are 30 confirmed casualties and more than 50 injured persons in this village alone."

At this stage, urgently needed relief goods are fresh drinking water, food, drugs, as well as blankets and basic every-day commodities. humedica offers targeted support to corresponding distributions run by our local partner Partners in Relief and Development.

Furthermore, we are considering to deploy a logistician, a coordinator and probably also a doctor who could train local medical staff.

humedica would like to ask the people in Germany to make targeted donations in order to support the commitment in Myanmar:
