There to help not only in case fires

by Ruth Bücker,  2011/09/01

Fire fighters save lives, put out blazes, rescue and protect – and lately they have offered their help to starving children, women and men at the Horn of Africa by means of a large-scale donation campaign.

In the middle of August 2011, brigade commander Konrad Ott sent out letters to 262 Fire Brigades from Lindau to Buchloe and called for targeted donations to support the diverse disaster relief projects of humedica in East Africa.

Dadaab, the name of a region in the East African country of Kenya, where hundred thousands of people are starving and had to flee to the world’s largest refugee camp. A name and a place that are far away from Germany. At least in terms of kilometres.” This is the beginning of the committed fire fighter’s letter.

I think I am not only talking on behalf of the Volunteer Fire Brigade of Marktoberdorf, when I claim that the number of kilometres that separate us from the Horn of Africa is not important when it comes to how we feel about the misery of the starving people. We are convinced that we can offer our help and achieve something even from far away.

By means of this donation call, and thanks to comprehensive commitment, Mr Ott indeed achieved amazing results: committed volunteers of the Fire Brigade collected donations at weekly markets, and in front of shops, where they also asked people for a contribution. A contribution in form of donations that were to be passed on to humedica.

By means of this campaign, let us express the idea to offer help together. We rescue people in Germany, now let us also help the people at the Horn of Africa”, said Ott at the end of his letter. This aim was definitely achieved.

Last Sunday, on August 28, 2011, the donation campaign of the Fire Brigade ended with an impressive result: after a woman entered the fire station of Marktoberdorf in the last minute and made a donation of 300 euros, the total sum amounted to 14,020 euros.

This total sum was achieved both by proprietors of local companies, such as Franz Josef Fendt, who made a private donation of 2,500 euros, and by numerous individual Persons who wanted to help the people at the Horn of Africa.

Konrad Ott had already initiated and organised a similar donation campaign after the devastating tsunami in the year 2004. We would like express out thanks for this repeated generous support both to the initiator Konrad Ott and to all members of the Fire Brigades, and of course also to all those who contributed with their donations.
