Distributions of food and blankets in the Sendai region

by Ruth Bücker,  2011/03/21

"It is difficult to describe the current situation", Pastor Rick Justus reported from Japan a few moments ago. "Devastation is so immense that we are still struggling to comprehend it. People here are shocked and they need time to take in the entire extent of the destruction caused by the disasters. It is terrible!"

Rick Justus is the minister of the "Living Water Fellowship" community in Shimada, which is located south of Tokyo in the Shizuoka Prefecture. Together with his wife Connie he has been living in Japan and working at this community for years. When the married couple received the terrible news of the earthquake and the following Tsunami, they immediately planned relief measures in order to help the victims of this twofold disaster.

Since then, they have sent three trucks loaded with relief goods into the north east of Japan and they have been distributing urgently needed food and drinking water, as well as hygiene articles, blankets and clothes to the victims of the disaster. Preparations are running for a fourth shipment of relief goods.

We are supporting the relief goods distributions organised by the Justuses and their community with the donations that have been made to humedica. Reports about radiation having been detected in food and drinking water in particular in the north of the country make provision with uncontaminated food all the more important.

"We will mostly use the donated money in order to buy food and drinking water, since regional food here is considered to be contaminated. Other things that are urgently needed are nappies and in particular infant food", Rick Justus explained during the conversation.

The "Living Water Fellowship" community is one of the partners who receive support from Germany in form of donations made to humedica. Further donations are passed on to the organisation CRASH Japan (Christian Relief, Assistance, Support and Hope) with the purpose of buying and distributing relief goods. This organisation has been active in Japan for seven years and is very well prepared for a disaster of the extent the country experienced last week.

On the weekend, voluntary assistants of CRASH Japan already distributed materials for setting up emergency shelters, as well as rice and soy for more than 500,000 meals. However, due to the immense extent of the disaster, this will by far not be enough and thanks to the support of humedica the organisation will be able to procure and distribute more food and relief goods in the region around Sendai.

The fourth truck of relief goods sent by the "Living Water Fellowship" community will also drive to the region north of Sendai. "Devastation in this region is disastrous", reported Rick Justus. "When making the latest relief shipment, we drove along the northern coast of Japan for one hour, and all we could see for the entire trip was destruction.

Voluntary assistants are preparing relief packages that will be distributed in the region around Sendai. Thank you very much for enabling us to implement further measures by means of your donation. Photo: private/Connie Justus

In a village close to the epicentre, 20,000 inhabitants have lost almost everything they owned. 10,000 of the inhabitants are missing and are probably dead. Such as are many more people from this region. We are very grateful for the help from Germany."

Dear friends and sponsors of humedica: due to the problems at the Fukushima nuclear power plant, the situation in the north east of Japan is still tense. For the time being we still have to observe further developments before deciding if we can send a medical team to the disaster region.

But nevertheless, we would like to ask you do make donations in order to help us to support local communities and partners with procuring and distributing essential relief goods. You can make an online donation or a donation to the account below: Thank you very much!
