"Hope in a Destroyed Paradise" - pictures by Thomas Grabka

by Sven Ramones, 2011/02/10

Barely a month has passed since the first anniversary of the devastating earthquake in Haiti. Many persons probably remember the images of this terrible disaster all too well. The news of hundred thousands of casualties and the misery of millions of people living in the destroyed Caribbean state were spreading all over the world.

But what has become of Haiti, months after one of the worst blows of fate that have ever hit the small country? In the framework of a (touring) photo exhibition with the title "Hope in a Destroyed Paradise - Haiti after the earthquake of January 12, 2010" humedica would like to give an insight that helps to answer this question.

The exhibition does not only show pictures of the still problematic reality, but also of signs of hope, of new beginnings and future in Haiti. Photo: Thomas Grabka

In October 2010, Thomas Grabka, a renowned photographer from Berlin, (publications in DER SPIEGEL, STERN, FOCUS, DIE SÜDDEUTSCHE, TIME MAGAZINE and other important printing media) visited Haiti and the relief projects run in the country by humedica.

The photos he has taken on his journey point out the still problematic reality in the country. But they also show the life that has developed amidst destruction. They show moments of hope, of new beginnings, and of future.

In 2011, the exhibition will be shown in various German cities starting from the home town of humedica, Kaufbeuren. Further exhibition locations have so far been planned to be Kempten (May/June 2011) and Munich (dates to be confirmed).

Besides the Lord Mayor of Kaufbeuren, Stefan Bosse, also photographer Thomas Grabka himself, such as former team members and persons in charge of the humedica missions in Haiti have been invited to visit the opening event. Furthermore, representatives from the fields of politics, economics and culture have been invited.

humedica is looking forward to seeing you there!
