humedica relief aid in Japan: relief goods distributions are being prepared - aid in the field of reconstruction

by SRI,  2011/03/17

"The withdrawal of the first humedica mission team is only a temporary interruption, but by no means the end of our relief measures", CEO Wolfgang Groß emphasized clearly. At the moment, preparations are running at full speed for the distribution of relief goods via the networks of our local partner "Liebenzeller Mission". First talks have already been conducted regarding humedica's contribution to projects in the field of reconstruction.

The fact that the first mission team returned from Japan (Photo: Narita Airport, Tokyo) by no means indicates an end to humedica's relief measures in the country. We still want to stand at the side of the countless people in misery. Photo: humedica/Ruth Bücker

It was the right decision to withdraw the relief assistants from Japan. The reactions of numerous friends and sponsors clearly show their understanding for this decision. Also the team itself agreed to take this step from the very beginning, although it had been harder to accept for them from an emotional perspective. Our assistants had been willing to help and they would certainly have done so, had it not been for the threat of escaping radioactivity.

In the meantime, humedica has been preparing relief goods distributions via the networks of the local partner "Liebenzeller Mission". This organisation has been committed in Japan for 85 years and they also do diaconical work in the country.

At the moment, the largest challenge regarding the implementation of this form of aid is the immensely problematic infrastructure situation in the country. Large parts of the disaster region in the north east of Japan have been devastated by earthquakes and tsunamis and are therefore difficult to reach, while at the same time the extent of the threat posed by escaping radioactivity is still not clearly defined.

We have also talked through potential support measures in the field of reconstruction aid with the employees in charge of "Liebenzeller Mission", provided that we receive targeted donations for this purpose. Also in this field, humedica disposes of a lot of experience and has successfully implemented several projects also in the recent past. For example we supported the construction of 750 earthquake resistant houses after the floods in Pakistan, and the reconstruction of two schools and a children's home in Haiti; both projects are still running.

We would like to ensure our donors that every donation will be directly used for the relief measures in Japan. Of course we will keep you up to date about further developments by means of all communication channels at our disposal. We will be pleased to answer your questions about this mission. If you would like to contact us, please use the existing contact data.
