Die Katastrophe nach der Katastrophe

by Klaus Ruhrmann/RBU,  2011/01/27

After the devastating earthquake that took place in Haiti on January 12 last year, professional male nurse Klaus Ruhrmann worked for humedica at the "Hospital of Hope" in the Haitian capital Port-au-Prince for a total of thirteen weeks in order to help and treat injured and traumatised persons.

Thanks to Klaus Ruhrmann, both motivated and interested local nurses and trainees could successfully be trained in matters of hygiene and wound care. "When I started my journey back home to Germany in October, I was pleased to know that all the patients were given optimal care", said the male nurse from North Rhine-Westphalia.

"Then we received the terrible news: cholera outbreak in Haiti. Once again, humedica took on the challenging task of helping those in misery. Together with my wife I soon made the decision to travel to Haiti for four more weeks from the middle of December to the middle of January and not to refrain from any exertions or challenges.

Before my arrival, the humedica team headed by Irmgard Harms had already created optimal working conditions for offering medical treatment to those in misery. Equipped with a sufficient amount of drugs and material, we could also treat other diseases than cholera and even assist births as well as provide mother and child with some initial supplies.

Medical care for the patients in the cholera region will by all matters be offered until the end of January, and I hope that also the live-threatening infectious disease will be defeated by then. In the district humedica which is in charge of, people live of agriculture; they grow rice, onions and other crops.

The people are friendly and humedica is accepted very well by the population. I was given the opportunity of being part of the relief forces in a country that has suffered a hard fate, part of a great team. Therefore I would like to thank the project team, in particular our country coordinator Caroline.

Please continue supporting our efforts for living Charity in Action. Thank you very much!

Yours Klaus Ruhrmann"

Due to a new increase in the number of persons infected with cholera, humedica will extend medical missions beyond the originally planned conclusion date at the end of January.

Please support our relief measures in Drouin. Thank you very much!
