humedica supports local partner in Djibouti

by Ruth Bücker,  2011/08/10

While international relief measures focus on supporting the population of Somalia, Kenya and Ethiopia, more than 160,000 children, women and men in the east African country of Djibouti are also affected by the famine.

Although the country, which is of about the same size as the German federal state of Hesse, is not struggling with flows of refugees pushing in from neighbouring countries, the number of those suffering from hunger in proportion to the total population of about 500,000 inhabitants still implies immense misery.

Together with our local partner Nehemia, who already cooperated with humedica after the devastating earthquake in Haiti, we were now able to help the first 70 families by means of distributing life-saving relief goods.

Local employees of Nehemia distributed the first relief packages to families that have found shelter at refugee camps in the Dikhil Region, which is located at about 150 kilometres south west of the capital of Djibouti. These people fled their home villages due to droughts and hunger.

At first we are planning to provide therapeutic additional food and basic food to 300 families which are suffering from severe undernutrition. Furthermore they will receive sanitary articles, clothes, water containers and articles of daily use. Quantities are calculated such that a family consisting of six to seven persons is provided for during the days between the distributions.

Except the special additional food, all essential relief goods – also the first ration that has already been distributed – are bought by local employees of the humedica partner from wholesalers in the capital of Djibouti City.

The trip to the capital would have been an insurmountable obstacle for the weakened families. Not to mention the costs; none of the families would have been able to afford the trip.

humedica was able to implement these first relief measures in Djibouti together with Nehemia thanks to the generous donations that were made in the framework of the Sternstundentag campaign. These first financial means were collected during this campaign.

Since we are planning further relief measures, we would like to ask you, dear friends and sponsors, to continue fighting the famine together with us and to support the people who are living in misery through no fault of their own. Thank you very much!
