Summer holidays in Ethiopia

by Maren Kuchler,  2011/10/17

The news that reached us from the Horn of Africa during the past few weeks above all focussed on the drought, famine and disasters. Far from the large refugee camps, humedica has been running a familiy sponsorship programme in the capital of Addis Abeba and its surroundings for more than two years.

Even before the famine disaster, Ethiopia was one of the poorest countries in the world. Almost 40 percent of the population live below the poverty line, that means of less than 1.25 US dollars per day. They lack almost everything: food, education, income.

humedica tries to improve this situation by means of running a family sponsorship programme. In the framework of this programme, food, hygiene articles, medical care and care by social workers are provided, and projects for non-profit purposes are promoted.

During the summer holidays, children usually have a great time, and so do also the children involved in the sponsorship programme in Ethiopia. Early in the morning, the children are packed into a bus and then, singing and dancing, they make a trip of 50 kilometres southwards, from Addis Abeba to Debre Zeit, where more sponsored families live.

There's a football game on today, and the two teams will play for the "humedica Cup". After an exciting game, the home team wins, but that is only an irrelevant fact. What is important is having fun and getting to know each other. Of course, a common lunch is also part of the trip and in the afternoon the children can explore their surroundings. For many children this is the first time they leave the capital.

Furthermore, the summer holiday programme for the children also includes computer and English courses, watching a film at the cinema, visiting the theatre, drawing, making music and dancing. Another highlight is the visit of Awash Melkasa, where the children are taken on a tour around an aluminium factory and a sugar cane plantation.

By means of these events, the holidays became a special time for the girls and boys, and even though their holidays were over far too soon, they were highly motivated to start into the new school year, during which they will be supported with their studies by means of an additional seminar.

An eventful summer is coming to an end; a new, instructive school year is beginning. Would you also like to provide a child or an entire family with the possibility of getting an education? Then become a sponsor by clicking here.

Also your donations have a great effect on the future of the people in Ethiopia. Please help us to help. Thank you very much!
