Of little and great heroes

by Ruth Bücker, 2011/10/26

Surrounded by a group of children, a man is standing at the edge of a football field that has been turned into a tent city for the victims of the earthquake. The little girls and boys are raising their hands above their heads; they are wearing disposable gloves. They are given waste bags by the old man and highly motivated they start collecting waste on the camp grounds.

They are the little heroes of one of the tent cities on the outskirts of the city of Ercis, where the earthquake that occurred a few days ago caused the worst damage and where people suffered most severely. Hardly any of the houses is still safe to enter, report the families who have found shelter at the emergency accommodations. Or they collapsed completely.

The about 1,000 persons who are now living in 170 tents and also the hundreds of relief assistants who travelled here from all over the country and are working tirelessly, are the great heroes of this terrible disaster that - according to public statements - caused more than 400 casualties and thousands of injured.

After the humedica team had at first worked together with Turkish colleagues in the medical field and drove to collapsed buildings at night in order to treat rescued victims or injured relief assistants, and during the day offered medical emergency aid for earthquake victims at the gym that had been turned into an emergency department, the team members will now treat people at this tent city.

First medical treatment of these children, women and men could already be realised and acute injuries were treated. But many of them still suffer pain or from less severe injuries, the healing process of their fractures needs to be checked on and their dressings changed. And then there are the difficult living conditions and the cold that provide perfect conditions for flues and pneumonia to spread.

Please support us to help these persons. With your donation you can support our relief measures, which prospectively will not end after the medical relief measures, but will also be extended to the distribution of relief goods. Thank you very much.
