Every year, the Philippines are hit by about 20 heavy rainstorms. However, the typhoons "Nesat" and "Nalgae", both of which affected the main island of Luzon within a very short time, cannot be considered as normal rainstorms. They brought on massive floods and immense destruction.
So far, the authorities have confirmed 58 casualties, but there are still persons missing. Official sources estimate the number of homeless persons to amount to 360,000. On this Tuesday evening, a medical team of humedica, consisting of four doctors, set out to the disaster region in order to offer their help.
The devastating typhoons passed the Philippines on the weekend, but the destructive traces they left behind are obvious everywhere. Although the inhabitants of Philippines are used to rainstorms and made corresponding preparations, the people could hardly oppose the force of these rainstorms. Luzon, the country's main island, has been affected severely, and the authorities are desperately fighting the consequences.
"We decided to send out a doctor team", said the CEO of humedica on Tuesday morning. "The four experienced mission team members will take a flight from Munich to Manila this evening."

Besides coordinator Dieter Schmidt (Nesselwang) and his wife, nurse Nancy Schmidt, also the very experienced disaster relief doctor Dr. Irmgard Harms (Hindelang) will form part of the team. The team will be completed by Dr. Philipp Fischer from Bonn.
At the mission location, the team will be able to take advantage of the existing infrastructure of our long-term partner Operation Blessing Philippines, with whom humedica could already cooperate successfully in the past.
"Although the typhoons have passed, I do not expect the situation to improve in the long term, due to the monsoon", forecasted Wolfgang Groß shortly before the departure of the relief team. "It is important that we take action now and offer our help to the people".
