Heavy earthquake in eastern Turkey: humedica sends out first medical team

by Sven Ramones, 2011/10/23

On Sunday afternoon, eastern Turkey was shaken by a heavy earthquake of magnitude 7.3 on the Richter scale. The region surrounding the city of Van has been affected particularly strong. Estimates regarding the consequences of the heaviest earthquake that has occurred in Turkey in many years are currently amounting to up to one thousand casualties. Only a short time after the news of the disaster and its estimated extent, humedica decided to send out a first medical mission team to eastern Turkey.

Several aftershocks, interrupted communication and temperatures below zero at night make rescue works substantially more difficult. Numerous houses have collapsed completely. People are digging for survivors using spades and their bare hands.

In face of the quake's magnitude and the so far unpredictable extent of destruction, humedica will send out a medical relief team to the disaster area.

The humedica mission team that will travel to the earthquake region in Turkey consists of the experienced relief doctor Prof. Dr. Bernd Domres (Tübingen), Dr. Philipp Fischer (Bonn), coordinator Florian Klinner (Kaufbeuren) and media coordinator Ruth Bücker (Konstanz/Kaufbeuren). Possibly, the team will be joined by another medical relief assistant before their departure.

On Monday, October 24, 2011, at presumably 9 o'clock, a charter flight will take the mission team with their equipment and the so-called Medi-Kit for first medical treatment of up to 3000 persons from Memmingen Airport to Turkey. Due to the time it takes the team members to arrive there and due to the transport of the necessary equipment, the departure might possibly be delayed slightly.

humedica would like to ask the people of Germany for a targeted donation in order to support the disaster relief measures in Turkey.
