More than 1200 patients treated

by Judith Kühl,  2010/08/17

Just as she was in Haiti at the beginning of the year, Judith Kühl is currently in charge of coordinating reporting to Germany. Her “Thoughts from Pakistan” are touching insights into an extraordinary relief mission.

Highly gratefully, we have seen off the first doctor team today. The team headed by Prof Dr Bernd Domres had set up a mobile hospital in Peshawar immediately after the flood wave. Within a period of nine days they treated more than 1200 patients.

Most frequently they offered treatment to people suffering from pneumonia, skin diseases and bowel complaints due to the dirty water.

“It is true that treatment for such diseases is less complex than for the severe injuries and fractures we treated for example after the earthquake in Haiti”, explained the experienced emergency surgeon Prof Dr Domres who had already taken part in humedica missions in Chile and Haiti this year, “but basic medical treatment is still just as important. The victims of the flood are still in danger and prone to epidemics”.

Ferdinand Hofer, medical student (Tübingen), looks back to his mission and reports: “When seeing the pictures in the media before the mission, I could not imagine the real extent of the disaster. It has been an impressive experience to encounter the people, to see their misery with my own eyes and to be able to help”.

Another member of the team was doctor Rashid Al Badi from Tübingen. He has been impressed by the open-mindedness the people showed towards him. “I was surprised by the large amount of information the patients shared with me regarding their lives. Above all the fates of many female patients have touched me deeply”.

While the first team is now on their way back to Germany, our new team has arrived this morning. Four more motivated and well-trained humedica assistants from Germany will continue the important work of caring for the flood victims over the next two weeks. It’s nice to have you here!
