STRONG EARTHQUAKE STRIKES CHILE: humedica sends out a team

by SRI,  2010/02/27

Although humedica is offering intensive medical support in the earthquake region in Haiti, a first relief team will be sent out to Chile in South America during the next few hours. Only a few hours ago, the South American state has been struck by a devastating earthquake of magnitude 8,8 on the Richter scale. Furthermore, as a consequence, American authorities announced a tsunami warning applying to the whole Pacific Area.

The epicentre of the strong earthquake was located to the south of the Chilean capital of Santiago. Map: PA/Kindernothilfe

Up to now, only little information has leaked through from Chile: according to a statement of the Chilean Ministry of the Interior, at least 300 people died during an earthquake in the south of the country, close to the city Concepcion. Michelle Bachelet, the Chilean president, said on TV that the number of casualties could increase further. She appealed to the people to keep calm.

In some parts of the country, public basic services broke down; hospitals had to be evacuated. The international airport of the capital of Santiago had to be closed down. At the humedica headquarters the decision to send a relief team to Chile was made within only a few minutes. A team has start out to the Chilean capital, led by our leading relief doctor Prof Dr Dr Bernd Domres (Tübingen).

There, they will be expected by representatives of our partner organisation Kindernothilfe e.V. (Duisburg). Similar to our commitment in Haiti, the humedica relief team will cooperate with Kindernothilfe during their mission in Chile.

In order to support our work, humedica urgently would like to ask the people in Germany for purposeful donations to the account below:
