First team with drugs on the road to Peshawar

by Ruth Bücker,  2010/08/03

In Peshawar, a city in the northwest of Pakistan, it has been raining continuously since early in the morning, according to Benjamin Schäffer, the director of our partner organisation ARO Pakistan. He reports that the situation is chaotic and that the people depend on international aid.

The actual extent of the flood disaster is still unknown, but even at this point the situation is already alarmingly serious. According to estimates several million people are affected by the floods; more than 1000 persons lost their lives.

In order to provide medical care to the survivors, humedica has sent a first medical team to Peshawar. After having arrived at their destination, the mission team will have access to the existing infrastructure of our local partner ARO Pakistan (Aid for Refugees and Orphans).

Early on Wednesday morning the relief doctors Prof Dr Dr Bernd Domres (Tübingen), Dr Rashid al Badi (Tübingen), paramedic Ferdinand Hofer (Tübingen) and a coordinator will set out for Pakistan, taking with them drugs needed for first medical treatment of 3000 flood victims.

The honorary employees from Germany are expecting to encounter millions of people who have been left homeless, are dehydrated and suffering from hunger and diarrhoea or skin diseases due to dismal hygienic conditions and the warm and humid climate.

According to Benjamin Schäffer, Peshawar itself has not been affected as heavily and directly as the surrounding settlements, since it is located a little higher up. Those buildings most solidly built have withstood the heavy rainfalls and are now serving as shelter for numerous flood victims.

Those affected have been accommodated in school houses which now – during the vacations – can be used as emergency shelters and they are now provided with clean drinking water by ARO. After their arrival, the members of the humedica team will immediately start to treat diseases at these reception camps.
