Pakistan: flood victims are in need of medical care

by Ruth Bücker,  2010/08/02

Monsoon floods as heavy as this year have not been seen in the northwest of Pakistan for the last 80 years and they have caused more than 1000 deaths. An estimated number of more than one million people have been affected by the floods and have been left homeless.

The monsoon starts at the beginning of June in South Asia and, accompanied by heavy rainfalls, it moves northwards across the Indian subcontinent before it eventually stops in September. In the middle of July it reaches the northwest of Pakistan and currently the rainfalls are causing numerous rivers to overflow their banks and entire districts to be flooded.

For this reason humedica is currently compiling an action plan suggesting the best way of dealing with this situation, in order to provide medical care to the people rescued from the floods. The diseases which will need to be treated most frequently in the time to come will probably be diarrhoea and skin diseases, since they tend to spread under warm and humid climatic conditions.

Besides medical care, humedica will also distribute relief goods – in particular canvas, therapeutic food and drinking water.

humedica employees are conferring with Nils Stilke, a professional nurse who has already taken part in humedica missions in disaster zones for several times, and has been running a school project in Pakistan for years.

Furthermore we are engaged in dialogue with other potential partner organisations concerning coordination and the necessity and implementation of relief measures. humedica has already been committed in Pakistan after a heavy earthquake in 2005 and after a hurricane two years ago.

It has not yet been confirmed whether humedica will be supported by institutional donors. And for this reason we depend on you more than ever, dear friends and donors. Please support our work by means of a donation to the account below:
