Charity in Action VII: Hurdle Race for Haiti

by Franziska Baur,  2010/02/27

In order to collect donations for the survivors of the earthquake in Haiti, student representatives of the elementary school “Volksschule Dietmannsried” came up with a very special idea. Thinking of the Olympic Winter Games which were currently taking place in Canada, they decided to organise a hurdle race.

In the face of the still very low temperatures, this race had to take place inside the school gym. For every finished round, the parents donated a sum which they had decided on themselves before the race. No matter whether young or old, everyone took part in the race and gave their best. A substantial total sum of 4,700 euros was collected during this event.

At the end of February, Philipp Fackler, student representative of the Volksschule, handed over the donation to humedica.
The money which had been collected during the race is to be used for the reconstruction of a local school in Haiti, which will be supported by humedica over the next few years.

By means of this initiative under the motto “students help students”, the Volksschule made an important contribution to improving the situation in Haiti. The humedica team would like to thank all the students, teachers, parents and other people who have contributed to this donation.

With combined forces

Soon after the disaster in Haiti, Naturheilpraxis Schilling, a surgery for natural healing in Buchloe, also thought of a way of supporting the people in this country: for more than one month, the surgery offered massages at a price of 15 euros and the money collected during this initiative was then donated to humedica. The list documenting all the massages is lying next to the donation box in the surgery – and it is a long list.

The initiative started on January 18, 2010 and lasted until the end of February. During this time, Michaela Schilling, the owner of the surgery, and her two assistants combined their forces – they massaged for a good cause and even worked over time voluntarily. After weeks of committing themselves in this way, they handed over the collected money – a total of 1,050 euros – to humedica.

humedica would like to express its thanks for the many working hours which have been put into this commitment.

The band Rodamón collects donations by giving a concert

During a musical evening, the members of the music band “Rodamón” (globetrotters) performed songs and poems from a large variety of countries and cultures and by doing so they collected donations in order to support the people in Haiti. It was the first concert of the newly-founded band and they immediately became very popular with their audience.

About 50 friends and acquaintances of the musicians had been invited to the event which took place at Galerie Väth in Aufkirch (Allgäu). A total amount of 500 euros was collected and handed over to humedica by part of the trio shortly after the concert. humedica would like to thank the musicians, and all those who contributed, for their musical commitment and the donated money.

By means of this donation they contribute to the sustainable support of the people in Haiti who are still living under very difficult conditions even several weeks after the disaster.

You can help the people in Haiti also on the long term by making further donations. humedica will continue its commitment in Haiti also during the next two years.
