humedica team has arrived in the mission area

After a long, but unproblematic journey, the humedica team headed by coordinator Ferdinand Hofer has safely arrived in Peshawar. After first talks to employees of the local partner organisation ARO Pakistan, our team members are now getting ready for treating the flood victims.

Thanks to its favourable location, the city of Peshawar which is located in the north west of Pakistan has not been affected directly by flooding and buildings have not collapsed during the heavy rainfalls. Therefore many of the flood victims who have lost their homes are taken to the city and hence to safety by means of helicopters.

According to Ferdinand Hofer there hardly exist any organised or clearly determined refugee camps up to now. The medical student was told by local employees, that many flood victims had been offered accommodation by friends or relatives. Other persons who have lost their homes were currently living in the streets.

The first step the members of the humedica team - for the appointment of which the Stiftung des Deutschen Instituts für Katastrophenmedizin (Foundation of the German Institution for Relief Medicine) had played an important role - will have to take, is to assess the situation by themselves. Together with employees of ARO Pakistan, they will start with driving to those regions where many flood victims are currently staying.

In these regions the doctors Prof Dr Dr Bernd Domres and Dr Rashid al Badi, who already worked together in various hospitals in Pakistan last year, will start their treatments. Thanks to action medeor, the team has already been able to take drugs for the first 3000 patients to Pakistan.

Furthermore, on Friday August 06, 2010, Dr Toni Großhauser will set out for Peshawar. For a period of several years, the paediatrician had already lived and worked in the Pakistani city which has now become the mission base of humedica and after his arrival he will support the humedica team.
