EARTHQUAKE IN HAITI: medical teams working tirelessly – hundreds of patients – very serious injuries

by SRI,  2010/01/17

The news reaching us from the two humedica teams working in Port-au-Prince are sad: tirelessly, the four doctors, one nurse and a student of medicine are treating survivors with very serious injuries. There is a lack of medical staff and, above all, equipment. On Monday, humedica is going to send more doctors and 39 tons of relief supplies to Haiti.

The doctors Dr. Michael Brinkmann (Bonn), Dr. Britta Merten (Mönchengladbach), Dr. Simeon Janzen (Detmold), Philip Hebel (Bern), Norman Hecker (Tübingen), Dr. Annette Frick (Tübingen), Matthias Rekowski (Dusslingen), Dr. Benjamin Kienast (Hamburg) and Dr. Christian Queitsch (Hamburg), will head for the disaster area from Düsseldorf airport on Monday.

During their work, they will be assisted by pharmacist Dr. Julia Micklinghoff (Hannover), the two nurses Stephanie Mühlbauer (Marburg) and Sabine Brehm (Germaringen) as well as paramedic Tim Frodermann (Gießen) and the coordinators Florian Hansmann (Wolfsburg), Judith Kühl (Berlin) and Jhonny Lemuar Bernard (Berlin).

This strong team has the possibility to get to Haiti very quickly, thanks to the support of the AIR BERLIN GROUP, who is going to provide an Airbus A330-200 free of charge that will take off from Düsseldorf airport on Monday. Additionally, 30 tons of relief supplies (medical equipment, medicatation, food, tents etc.) for the earthquake victims will be transported in the plane, among them five tons provided by our cooperation partner Kindernothilfe e. V. (Duisburg).

Some impressions of the dramatic situation in the disaster zone in and around Port-au-Prince can be gained from a TV report on WDR (in German) transmitted to Germany by journalist Thomas Görger who has accompanied the first two humedica teams during their work in Haiti from the beginning .
