EARTHQUAKE IN HAITI: humedica-doctors are working until exhaustion

by SRI,  2010/01/19

They are working to the limits of their physical resources and at times even beyond: The two medical teams from humedica who have taken charge of the “hospital of hope” since Friday, are giving their best to help countless people in their great distress.

Bravely and tirelessly, drawing on all their experience, the two teams are trying to cope with the never-ending rush of patients. “We are treating the most serious of injuries”, reports coordinator Dieter Schmidt on the phone. The suffering is immense and the rush of patients who urgently need help is never-ending.

Alongside all the suffering, dramatic experiences and very critical injuries, the aid workers also experience moments of joy and hope: after helping a mother give birth to two healthy twins on Saturday, three more babies entered the world on Saturday.

The arrival of the third team consisting of 16 volunteers is eagerly awaited in Port-au-Prince. At present, the humedica team is still on its way to Haiti together with our partners from Bild hilft e. V. - Ein Herz für Kinder, Kindernothilfe, Apotheker ohne Grenzen Deutschland e. V., World Vision as well as several media representatives.

On board, the convoy arranged by the Dominican government is transporting about 30 tons of relief supplies including food items (e.g. baby food donated by the relief agency GAiN Germany e. V., Gießen), medication and medical equipment.

Thanks to the multi-faceted, unbureaucratic, spontaneous and generous support provided by numerous donors, companies and organisations humedica maintains friendly contact with, we have been able so far to dispatch 100 tons of relief supplies to the disaster area; the goods are eagerly awaited there.

From Friday onwards, if everything goes well, the teams will receive support from the air: Simon Tanner from the Swiss helimission will fly to Port-au-Prince from Miami and assist the aid workers with a helicopter.

The humedica relief efforts in Haiti are carried out in close cooperation with Kindernothilfe (Duisburg), World Vision (Friedrichsdorf) and Bild hilft - Ein Herz für Kinder (Hamburg). Moreover, we are receiving support from AIR BERLIN GROUP (Berlin), GAiN Germany e. V. (Gießen), hoffnungszeichen e. V. (Singen), Apotheker ohne Grenzen Deutschland e.V. and Apotheker helfen e. V. - Hilfswerk der bayerischen Apotheker (Munich). Again, at this point, humedica would like to say thanks for any kind of support and the excellent cooperation.
