After earthquake in Haiti: charity in action

by Ruth Bücker, 2010/01/27

That many people show deep sympathy for the earthquake victims in Haiti, is reflected in their remarkable commitment. Both companies and private donors are backing the work of humedica by supporting the aid organization through various events. At this point, we would like to show you some examples of charity in action.

Farewell party for the benefit of earthquake victims

Christopher Kuba is going to leave Germany behind for four years to work in the United States of America. Before his departure, he organized a farewell party for his friends in Kaufbeuren – and took this opportunity to celebrate for a good cause.

The young man had long planned to go to New Mexico/USA for reasons of business. That he would celebrate a farewell party with his friends had also been for sure. The idea to do something good through the party, however, was a spontaneous one.

Together with his friends and three bands who performed at the party, Christopher Kuba raised 444,44 Euros for the aid of earthquake victims.

Memorial service in Berlin

At the St. Hedwig’s cathedral in Berlin, a memorial service for the earthquake victims in Haiti was held on Thursday. The response was overwhelming and the deep sympathy expressed for the earthquake victims by those who attended the service was very moving.

At times, words failed the auxiliary bishop Dr. Matthias Heinrich from Berlin in the face of the unimaginable extent of the disaster. In his sermon, he reminded people of all the victims whose loved ones could not even weep for since they had to be buried in mass graves.

Particular sympathy goes out to the families of the victims, as was also expressed by the ambassador of Haiti, H.E. Mr. Jean-Rober Saget. Impressed and convinced by the relief efforts carried out by humedica, the ambassador, who maintains friendly contacts with the aid organization, emphasized that he was counting on future cooperation with humedica.

Charity concert by Youth Wind Orchestra Marktoberdorf

Unanimously and on their own initiative, the Youth Wind Orchestra Marktoberdorf, consisting of about 70 young musicians, decided to do something good for the population of Haiti.

Spontaneously, they arranged a concert for free together with their conductor, Thomas Wieser. The donations raised were handed over completely to humedica.

The performance lasted almost two hours. Enriched by information about Haiti (presented by flutist Sabine Riedel), the handing over of cheque amounting to 500 Euros by the Fendt company and a report by humedica coordinator Simone Winneg, time passed much too quickly.

At the end of the evening, the money raised amounted to 5000 Euros. Heartfelt thanks for this event.

After the hustle and bustle of the weekend, on Monday most restaurants are closed. This is also the usual practice at the restaurant “Zum Hirsch”. Yet last Monday, everything was different.

The Blochums, proprietors of the inn, had organized a charity dinner with Caribbean delicacies for the benefit of the earthquake victims in Haiti. Thomas Blochum, the junior proprietor of the restaurant and initiator of the event, was very pleased about the positive response his idea received.

All of his staff members agreed to come to work on their normal day off to host the about 70 guests.

At the end of the evening, 1870 Euros were handed over to humedica managing director Wolfgang Groß.

THANK YOU SO MUCH

Thanks to the overwhelming sympathy and the great support we received in many different ways, it is impossible at this point to thank everyone who helped.
These few examples stand as representatives of ALL friends and supporters of humedica: representative of their commitment, the responsibility they assume, and their support in general.
