Trip to Ethiopia: we are looking ahead

by SME/SRI,  2009/12/18

In the second week of December, humedica CEO Wolfgang Groß and humedica employee Susanne Merkel paid a visit to the projects of „Kinderdorf Bethanien e.V. in Ethiopia. This association was founded in 2002 and will hand over its projects and business to humedica from January 1, 2010. An exciting journey on which we were looking ahead.

Co-founder Susanne Merkel who is responsible for the Family Sponsorship Programme at humedica will continue to organise the projects also in future.

Debre Zeit is located at about 40 kilometres south of the Ethiopian capital Addis Abeba. With the exception of a few deep crater lakes and some formerly volcanic mountains jutting out of the plains, the country is mainly flat and level.

In the surroundings of the city, many peasant families are living under the most modest circumstances, as families have done for many hundreds of years. The land is dry; it only blossoms for a short time after the wet season. Water can be found only at depth of about 70 metres or deeper, the soil is rocky and therefore there are only few wells.

This means that the families have to walk long distances in order to carry the water to their cabins. Girls often are expected to do household work and do not go to school. Even today, only about 60 percent of the children in Ethiopia attend school and the country is considered to have the lowest school attendance worldwide.

We had the opportunity of visiting some of these families together. Meanwhile, we are supporting about 40 of them. On average, they consist of two to nine children, often single parents or parents who are ill or of very advanced age.

In Ethiopia it is still often the case that relatively young girls are married to older men by means of family-arranged marriages. Some years later, the burden of caring for the family must be shouldered by the women alone, since their men are too old.

It is the children of those families we support by means of sending them to local schools and supplying them with school uniforms, school materials and sanitary products. Our employees visit their families on a regular basis.

We have organised agricultural training measures and supplied the families with sheep and chickens in order to improve their living conditions. Further programmes with the objective of promoting their economic strength are to take place in future. There are also plans for more efficient water supply.

During their missions in Ethiopia, the humedica doctor teams have treated these families and furthermore we finance basic medical care at local hospitals.

Dear friends and donors, more wells are needed and humedica is very grateful for each donation – not matter if it is made online or by means of a bank transfer to the account indicated below: :
