Haiti: Eleven new houses and much new confidence

by Steffen Richter,  2009/08/07

For many years, Haiti has been repeatedly listed among the poorest countries on the globe. The paradise-like beauty of the peninsula Hispaniola that comprises Haiti and the Dominican Republic becomes secondary when considering the great poverty of the people living there, especially in Haiti.

Yet, during the past months, humedica has been able to make a considerable contribution in giving people more confidence for their future.

Unfortunately, structural poverty is not the only problem: Year by year, during the hurricane season, storms sweep across the country causing immense destruction and leaving many people injured or even dead.

In August and September 2008, Haiti was hit particularly hard: 170.000 families were immediately affected by natural disasters, many of them lost everything they had including their houses and huts.

humedica’s aid programme for Haiti had already started in spring 2008 and was then intensified after the storms by sending out medical teams and distributing relief supplies. From the beginning, one focus of the aid in the regions of Cabaret, Lavoute, Lamandier and Marbial has been the reconstruction of damaged buildings.

Thanks to the support of private donors and Sternstunden e. V., the aid organization founded by the Bayerischer Rundfunk (Bavarian broadcasting company), humedica has so far been able to build new houses for eleven families that had been very severely affected and to give new confidence to many more people by means of the aid programme as a whole.

Therefore, we would like to say thank you to all our supporters. And help will continue: In November 2009, a further medical team from humedica will fly to Haiti to stand by the people there.

Please support our work with a designated donation that will enable us to help people also in the future sending them voluntary medical staff; in Haiti and beyond.
