Earthquake in Italy: distribution of relief supplies with local partners – situation still critical

by MKO/SRI,  2009/04/08

By Wednesday afternoon tireless helpers had recovered 250 bodies out of the ruins, experts on site are afraid that more bodies will still be found. On Tuesday evening a strong aftershock magnitude 5.3 again terrified people.

Two and a half days after the severe earthquake that hit the region of Abruzzo the situation has hardly calmed down. More than 300 aftershocks have been registered since then, among them a strong one that claimed another casualty. Since yesterday the team of humedica has been involved in the intense distribution of aid supplies. Today distribution took also place in the completely destroyed village of Onna outside of L’Aquila.

Many buildings that had already been damaged before collapsed completely, people ran about screaming in panic, furthermore, the strongest aftershock to date claimed another casualty.

Together with partners of the local Alliance of Protestant Churches, GIM Italia (Gioventù in Missione) and Operation Blessing the humedica task force participated especially in the distribution of relief supplies (food, sleeping mats, blankets, medicine) in and around L’Aquila.

A further strong earthquake rattled the region on Tuesday evening. Photo:

Today the task force will carry out distributions in the mountain village of Onna outside of L’Aquila. Since Monday the village has sadly achieved fame: 60 of its 300 inhabitants died, mostly in their beds. Damage to buildings reaches 100% as has been documented by dismayed Italian task forces.

At the moment survivors sleep in tents or in their cars – provided that these remained intact.
Consequently, there is an urgent need of the relief items mentioned, especially given the low temperatures in the evening and during the night.

Humedica’s doctors have been registered at the medical control centre and are prepared for emergency assistance. Meanwhile, coordinator Markus Köhler tries to find out about possibilities of medium-term aid in the field of reconstruction.
Some minutes ago, humedica management decided to send a second coordinator to Italy who should arrive by Easter Saturday.

humedica is still appealing to Germany’s population for quick support in the form of a financial donation for this special aid project for our friends and southern neighbours in Italy:
