Dramatic situation in Eastern Congo: Thousands of refugees – humedica aid mobilised – First team is operating from border region to Uganda

by Steffen Richter, 2008/11/10

Since weeks, Government troops and Tutsi rebels have been fighting over the control of the eastern province of Northern Kivu in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Around 250.000 people are currently displaced, as the increasingly concerned UN have recently reported.

At the same time the institution warned against a genocide in the region. After a careful assessment of the difficult security situation, humedica has decided to take immediate action by providing relief work from the border region to Uganda.

During an almost week-long stay in Uganda, humedica managing director Wolfgang Groß not only visited the National Prayer Breakfast in the capital Kampala and participated, on the invitation by minister Dr. Nsaba Buturo, at the ceremonies for Independence Day in the capital Kampala, but also travelled to the country's southwest border, to visit the remote Mutolere Hospital in Kisoro.

The small hospital, founded in 1957 by Franciscan nuns from Breda, Holland, is now becoming the base for the primary medical aid provided by an initial humedica team, consisting of the director of humedica's international projects and programmes department, Markus Köhler, as well as the experienced development aid officer Helmut Schrader. They will be joined by more doctors, whose names we will publish as soon as we have their travel confirmation.

As the renowned international news page, reliefweb, reports, referring to the Red Cross, more than 10.000 people have fled to Uganda since August and are now located in the catchment area of the Mutolere Hospital. "It will be our aim to bring mobile doctors' teams to the refugees from this base, in order to provide medical help there", explained Markus Köhler before leaving for Africa.

The hospital staff have already reported that the dramatic developments in the east of the neighbouring country Congo are having a direct effect on their daily work routine. Several times already patients with gunshot wounds had come in to be treated.

humedica will support the Mutolere Hospital not only with its professional manpower but also with drugs and medical goods in the form of donations in kind.

We would like to ask you, dear friends and patrons of our work, to support this difficult assignment. It is our mission to assist people in distress, and we consider it our task to bring from our base in Uganda rapid aid to the people of the Goma region, only a few kilometers away. They desperately depend on it.

Please enable us with a specific donation to take medium-term and sustainable action.
